Flashback

You were the star of my dream again last night
Which is ironic
Since you never liked to be the center of attention

We sat on the dock behind your summer cabin
In the company of no one but each other
And the moon

That was the night I discovered
Your laugh is my favorite song
And your arms are the only thing
I care to be wrapped in

I unveiled my secrets
And you told me yours
Underneath a specked sky
And the canopy of trees

I tried to help you
Fix your bad habits
And just as quickly
You became mine

And that was dangerous
Because vacation doesn’t last forever
And it broke my heart
To watch your face in the window pane
Fade into the distance
As mine went the opposite direction
Half a world away

I still look for you in the people on the streets
And the cars that pass by

I haven’t found a soul
Who could hold my heart in their hands
And make it feel like you did

I guess what I’m trying to say
Is that it’s been months
And I still miss you
Like the ocean misses the shore
The moment it’s sent away
