What if I’m not what you expect

Perhaps I should have known better
Than to let you wander
Through the unkempt forest
Guarded carefully by bones in my chest

In every pitter patter
That pumps life through my body
I am reminded of your presence
Of you familiarizing yourself with unknown territory
Never before traveled

Perhaps I should have kept it that way

What if the trees
Aren’t tall enough to suit your liking?
What if the endless monotone buzzing
Of pesky insects deters you?
What if you reach the summit and find a sunset
Much less beautiful than ones you’ve already seen?

Perhaps I should have known better
Than to help you break down my walls

Perhaps I should have known better
Than to let you pry open my ribcage

Perhaps I should have known better
Than to give you a map

Because perhaps you’ve explored better forests

And this one’s all I have
